About David Balogh
"David is a force of nature on stage, he has that rare mix of raw passion and elegance that makes you lean in and listen."
– Diego Cervantes (collaborator)
David Balogh is a jazz vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and cultural storyteller whose work bridges the worlds of Romanian folk traditions and contemporary jazz. A performer with deep roots in Romania and an ever-expanding presence in the United States, David has made it his mission to bring overlooked and underappreciated sounds of Eastern Europe into dialogue with the improvisational spirit of jazz. Whether performing in intimate venues, collaborating with international ensembles, or leading projects of his own, David creates music that is as soulful as it is daring.
At the heart of his current artistic journey is Echoes in Jazz, a project that reimagines traditional Romanian melodies through the language of modern jazz. Developed in collaboration with top-tier musicians in Boston and abroad, the project aims to celebrate Romanian identity while presenting it on a global stage. David has already partnered with cultural institutions such as the Brașov Philharmonic and Apollonia Cultural Bank, as well as private venues, showcasing his ability to bridge organizational support with bold creative vision. His performances are marked by an infectious joy that comes from making music together, what he describes as "moments when tradition meets improvisation".
Beyond Echoes in Jazz, David's career highlights include collaborations with exceptional musicians across Europe and the U.S. His versatility as a vocalist and instrumentalist allows him to cross genres with ease, while his passion for education and community building ensures his music resonates both on and off the stage. With projects in development that involve partnerships with the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) and applications for AFCN funding, David is actively building platforms to expand Romanian culture's footprint in the international jazz community.
Looking ahead, David continues to refine his voice as a performer, cultural advocate, and creative director. Whether busking on city streets, rehearsing with his ensemble, or dreaming up collaborations that span continents, his artistic path is defined by an unwavering belief in the power of music to connect cultures and people. As Petru Riti put it, "When David sings, you instantly understand that he was made for the stage."
At the moment, David is attempting a challenging balancing act, with finishing an undergraduate program, working on "Romanian Echoes in Jazz", preparing for a masters and performing on the side. Hardly finding any off days, but in his words "that's the best way to live".
